Facilitation

Facilitation is the use of an independent facilitator to run a meeting or group to help the participants get better outcomes. Facilitators are skilled in helping a meeting or group achieve its purpose in the best possible way. Where the purpose is not clear or agreed at the outset, the facilitator helps you to agree on a common purpose and then work towards it.

When would I use it?

Facilitation is useful for meetings or groups of any size. It can be for 2 people, or for 200, or more. It is also useful in all kinds of situations, such as where:

  • there are complex or sensitive issues
  • there is the potential for conflict or other difficult or awkward situations
  • the participants want to be free to focus on the issues, not the meeting process
  • a neutral person is wanted to run the meeting
  • you want to get the best out of everyone at the meeting

There are no limits on the topics and issues that a facilitator can help you with. The facilitator does not have to have knowledge of the subject of the meeting. His or her skills are in working with people, understanding group dynamics and designing meeting processes. You and the other participants are the experts in the subject matter and the facilitator is the expert in the process required to help you achieve what you want.
